Choosing the Right Stone

Choosing a diamond is................
The 4 Cs

Carat Weight

Diamonds, like all gemstones, are weighed in ‘carats’, a ‘carat is further divided into 100 ‘points’ (like 100p to the £). One should not confuse the term carat as a measurement of weight, with that used for purity of gold.

Colour

The closer a diamond is to ‘colourless’ the more valuable it will be. In this respect diamond is the only gemstone where lack of colour enhances value. However when a diamond has a definite colour, such as bright yellow or pink it will be known as a ‘Fancy’ and will be highly prized.

Clarity

All diamonds, when highly magnified, will display minute imperfections, these are known as inclusions. They may be traces of non-crystallised carbon, dry cracks within the crystal, growth features or other mineral deposits etc., but should never be considered as ‘flaws’. It would be better to think of them as natures’ fingerprint.

Cut

The fire and scintillation of each diamond is only released once the diamond polisher has worked his magic. It is the precision and delicacy of the cut that will transform an insignificant looking ‘pebble’ into a magnificent gem.
